WormGPT and the Rise of Criminal AI-as-a-Service
Cybersecurity experts are warning about WormGPT, a black-market AI tool designed for criminals. Unlike mainstream AI models that include content filters, WormGPT deliberately omits safeguards, allowing users to generate phishing emails, malware code, and scam scripts at scale.
Available on dark web forums since late 2024, WormGPT offers a low-cost subscription model, lowering the barrier to entry for cybercrime. “We’re seeing a democratization of cyber attacks,” says Alex Turner of CyberSafe Labs. “What once required technical skill can now be done by anyone with a credit card and an internet connection.”
Security firms report a rise in AI-assisted phishing campaigns, with emails that are better written, more persuasive, and harder for filters to catch. The FBI has issued alerts urging businesses to implement stronger email protections and employee training.
This marks a turning point: AI is no longer just a tool for defenders, it’s now being weaponized against them.
