Expert Insight: IBM AI Governance Report
A new IBM global study highlights a troubling gap between AI policy rhetoric and real-world governance. Although 80% of executives say AI governance is critical to responsible innovation, only 20-30% have put robust practices in place.
Findings:
- Most companies stop at mission statements and charters without embedding oversight into workflows.
- Few maintain audit trails or involve affected communities in AI decisions.
- Cross-functional teams (e.g., privacy officers, civil society reps) are often absent from governance boards.
Dr. Selene Ortega, co-author of the study, notes: “AI accountability requires more than a mission statement. It demands cultural change and active participation from those impacted by the technology.”
The report urges companies to:
- Build auditable AI systems.
- Engage affected communities.
- Establish governance as part of day-to-day AI development.
